These rules come from TRAI and the telecom operators, and apply to every SMS provider. We help you follow them.
- DLT registration is mandatory: your business, sender ID (header) and every message template must be registered before sending.
- Promotional SMS can only go to non-DND numbers, between 10 am and 9 pm.
- Transactional, service and OTP SMS can be sent 24x7, including to DND numbers, using approved templates.
- Links and call-back numbers inside messages must be whitelisted on the DLT portal.
- One SMS holds up to 160 English characters, or 70 characters in Hindi and other Unicode languages. Longer messages count as multiple SMS.
- Send promotional messages only to people who have agreed to hear from you.

Bulk SMS questions
The basics, in plain language.
What is DLT registration and do I need it?
Yes. DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration is required by TRAI for every business that sends SMS in India. You register your business, your sender ID and your message templates on an operator's DLT portal. We guide you through it.
How long does it take to start sending?
It depends mostly on DLT approvals for your business, sender ID and templates, which usually take a few working days. Once approved, we can set up your account quickly.
Can I send SMS in Hindi?
Yes. Hindi and other Indian languages are sent as Unicode SMS, where one SMS holds up to 70 characters instead of 160.
What's the difference between promotional and transactional SMS?
Promotional SMS are for offers and marketing - they only reach non-DND numbers between 10 am and 9 pm. Transactional and service SMS are for updates customers expect, like OTPs, reminders and alerts, and can be sent any time.
Is WhatsApp better than SMS?
They suit different jobs. WhatsApp allows images, buttons and two-way chat; SMS works on every phone without internet. Many businesses use SMS for OTPs and alerts, and WhatsApp for richer updates.
